Grandma’s Classic Meatloaf

Classic Meatloaf is a timeless comfort food, known for its hearty, flavorful taste and moist, tender texture. Made from a blend of ground beef, breadcrumbs, and savory seasonings, it’s often topped with a tangy ketchup glaze that caramelizes to perfection in the oven. Whether served with mashed potatoes and gravy or a simple side salad, this dish offers a satisfying, home-cooked meal that’s perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp mustard
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • ½ cup ketchup (for topping)
    Instructions:
    Step 1: Preheat the Oven
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    Step 2: Prepare the Ingredients
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, and beaten egg.
  • Add the milk, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper, and dried thyme (if using). Mix everything together until
well combined. Make sure not to overmix, as it can make the meatloaf dense.
    Step 3: Shape the Meatloaf
  • Place the meat mixture on a baking sheet or in a loaf pan. Shape it into a loaf, smoothing the top and edges with your hands.
    Step 4: Add the Topping
  • Spread ½ cup of ketchup evenly over the top of the meatloaf. This adds a delicious glaze as it bakes.
    Step 5: Bake the Meatloaf
  • Place the meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for 55-65 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C).
The top should be nicely browned, and the ketchup glaze should be slightly caramelized.
    Step 6: Rest and Serve
  • Once cooked, remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the juices redistribute, making the meatloaf moist and flavorful.
    Step 7: Serve
  • Slice the meatloaf and serve with your favorite sides like mashed potatoes, green beans, or a simple salad. Enjoy Grandma’s classic comfort food!
Tip: For a sweeter glaze, you can mix a little brown sugar into the ketchup before spreading it on top.
