15 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Ingredients:

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni (or any pasta of your choice)
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (optional, for topping)
    Instructions:
    Step 1: Cook the Pasta
  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  2. Add the elbow macaroni and cook according to the package instructions until al dente. This typically takes about 7-8 minutes.
  3. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
Step 2: Make the Cheese Sauce

  1. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Once the butter is melted, add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until the mixture turns a light golden color. This creates a roux, which will thicken the sauce.
  3. Gradually add the milk and heavy cream, whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. Continue to cook the mixture, stirring frequently, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon (about 5-7 minutes).
  5. Reduce the heat to low, and gradually add the shredded cheddar and mozzarella cheeses, stirring until the cheese is completely melted and the sauce is smooth.
  6. Stir in the mustard powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
Step 3: Combine Pasta and Sauce

  1. Add the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce, and stir until the pasta is evenly coated with the sauce.
Optional Step 4: Bake with Breadcrumb Topping

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Pour the macaroni and cheese into a greased baking dish.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the breadcrumbs with the melted butter.
  4. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of the macaroni and cheese.
  5. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
    Step 5: Serve and Enjoy!

  1. Remove the macaroni and cheese from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  2. Serve warm and enjoy the creamy, comforting goodness!
Way better than out of the box! This comfort macaroni and cheese is perfect for a cozy dinner or as a side dish for any occasion.
