This is a delightful and easy-to-make sushi roll that brings the flavors of
the West Coast to your kitchen. This popular sushi roll features a
combination of fresh crab (or imitation crab), creamy avocado, and crisp
cucumber, all wrapped in seasoned sushi rice and nori seaweed. Often
garnished with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and served with soy sauce,
wasabi, and pickled ginger, the California Roll offers a perfect balance of
textures and flavors, making it a favorite for both sushi enthusiasts and
beginners alike.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups sushi rice
- 2 1/2 cups water
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 4 sheets nori (seaweed)
- 1 avocado, peeled, pitted, and sliced
- 1 cucumber, peeled and sliced into thin strips
- 200g imitation crab meat (or real crab if preferred)
- 2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
- Soy sauce (for serving)
- Pickled ginger (for serving)
- Wasabi (for serving)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Sushi Rice:
o Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs
clear.
o Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook
according to the rice cooker’s instructions.
o Once cooked, let the rice sit for 10 minutes to steam.
o In a small bowl, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until
dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the cooked rice. Let
the rice cool to room temperature. - Prepare the Ingredients:
o Slice the avocado and cucumber into thin strips.
o If using imitation crab meat, shred it into pieces. If using real
crab meat, mix it with mayonnaise for a creamy texture
(optional). - Assemble the California Roll:
o Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Cover the mat
with plastic wrap to prevent sticking.
o Place a sheet of nori (shiny side down) on the bamboo mat.
o Wet your hands with water to prevent the rice from sticking,
and spread a thin, even layer of sushi rice over the nori,
leaving a 1-inch border at the top.
o Sprinkle toasted sesame seeds evenly over the rice. - Flip and Fill:
o Carefully flip the nori sheet over so the rice side is down on
the mat.
o Place avocado slices, cucumber strips, and crab meat along
the center of the nori. - Roll the Sushi:
o Using the bamboo mat, lift the edge of the nori closest to
you and begin rolling it away from you, applying gentle
pressure to keep the roll tight. Continue rolling until the
entire roll is formed.
o Use a sharp knife to cut the roll into 6-8 pieces. Wipe the
knife with a wet cloth between cuts to ensure clean slices. - Serve:
o Arrange the California rolls on a plate.
o Serve with soy sauce, pickled ginger, and wasabi on the side.
Enjoy your homemade California Rolls!
